Questions covered in the Solution:

  1. In the case of twin sisters Annie and Marla, what do you think they could or should have done anything differently? 2. What enabled Hanson to have greater success than the twin sisters in the validation of his product beyond his family and friends network? Should Hanson have targeted more than $10,000 for his campaign? Why or why not?
  3. In both cases, were the results from the crowdfunding campaign worth the effort?
  4. What would you do differently if you were to run a crowdfunding campaign?
  5. Based on the case and course readings, are there other sources of capital besides crowdfunding that might be better? What are the tradeoffs associated with these other options?

  1. In the case of twin sisters Annie and Marla, what do you think they could or should have done anything differently? Given that the sisters achieved the campaign goal of $10,000 but still lacked funding to scale up, should they launch another campaign or consider a different source of fundraising?

The twin sisters already had recognition within their close family circle and the friends who also extensively admire their product. They could have directly asked their friends or the family for the funds they needed or which they raised through their Kickstarter campaign. Hence, they would have prevented additional costs of involving the third-party. Moreover, they could also have borrowed this amount from their close friends for avoiding the depletion of the equity. Since this stage was considered to be the very start of their business cycle, they had to be very conscious and realize only cost effective decisions. They had to refrain from the trying new techniques since they can’t afford any deficiencies.

Hanson owned certain peculiarities which led him to realize greater success than the twin sisters from the Kickstarter campaign. He got practical insights for launching the Kickstarter campaign from the experiences of others who had already run their campaigns on Kickstarter. Hence, he was able to focus more on the video for the promotion of his product. Moreover, he formed a planned strategy to reach peers beyond his direct family and the friends.
